Income and tax tracking
for New Zealanders

Tax App records your commission income, rental income and expenses through the NZ tax year and calculates the income tax, GST and ACC due on them. Built for contractors, landlords and households.

Free during early access. No card required.

What Tax App does

Income, expenses, bank reconciliation, reports and a savings plan, organised per tax year.

PDF reports for your accountant

Every report is a PDF built from the same figures shown on screen, itemising the tax, credits and levies behind each total.

  • Annual tax summary itemising income tax, GST, ACC and any tax credits
  • Rental profit and loss apportioned by each owner's ownership share
  • Commission profit and loss, monthly statements and bank reconciliation reports
Tax App reports hub listing tax summary, rental, commission and reconciliation PDF reports

Expense records filled in from the invoice

Attach an invoice and AI extraction pre-fills the date, amount and provider. Each expense is categorised and linked to a provider contact and, where relevant, a rental property or commission stream. The invoice file stays stored on the record.

  • AI extraction pre-fills date, amount and provider from the uploaded invoice
  • Categories and provider contacts per rental property or commission stream
  • Invoice attachments stored with the expense record

Bank feeds and statement reconciliation

Connect your bank through Akahu and import transactions with one click, or upload the CSV export from your bank. Each transaction is matched against your income and expense records, regular payers are remembered for next time, and unmatched lines are listed so you can see what has not been recorded.

  • Bank feed imports pull everything new for the financial year; importing again never disturbs matched work
  • Statement lines matched against income and expense records, with regular payers remembered
  • Import by bank feed or CSV export; the matching works the same either way

A bank inbox that drafts your records

Transactions with no record yet are listed by account and grouped by day, the way a bank statement reads. Each one shows the record it would become and the contact it appears to be, so adding it is a single click into a prefilled form. Anything that is not business is dismissed and stays gone.

  • Connected accounts show how many transactions are still waiting to be recorded
  • Each transaction is matched to a likely contact and the right income or expense type
  • The merchant, what kind of purchase it was, and how it was paid, read at a glance
  • Add opens a prefilled record; dismiss clears transactions that are not business

A savings plan for the tax bill

Tax App calculates what to set aside for income tax and ACC from the income you record. A monthly plan then shows whether you are on track to cover the bill.

  • A monthly set-aside plan comparing planned and actual savings
  • IRD and ACC payments recorded as they fall due
  • Current surplus and projected surplus shown side by side

Sign-in options

Sign in with Google, or with email and password. Passwords are encrypted in your browser before transmission and stored only as salted hashes.

Xero

Connect your own Xero organisation and choose, separately for income and expenses, whether records are sent to Xero, brought in from it, or both. Income arrives already marked paid, because you only record money you have actually received.

Bank feeds

Connect your bank through Akahu and pull transactions straight into reconciliation and a bank inbox of suggested records. Read-only, revocable, and we never see your internet banking login.

Works with Xero

Connect your own Xero organisation and keep it in step with Tax App. You approve the connection in Xero itself - Tax App never sees your Xero password, and you can disconnect at any time.

Income arrives already paid

Each income record becomes a Xero sales invoice with its payment already recorded, dated the day the money came in. Tax App only ever records money you have actually received, so nothing lands in Xero as a debt that nobody owes.

Expenses arrive as bills, with their due dates

Each expense becomes a bill carrying the due date from its invoice, so what Xero says you owe is what you actually owe. It is marked paid the moment you reconcile it, which is the point the money is known to have left the account.

Reconciling settles the bill for you

Reconcile a bill here and it is marked paid in Xero shortly afterwards, without you pressing anything. It happens in the background, so a slow or unavailable Xero can never hold up your own reconciling.

The two charts of accounts already agree

Your expense accounts start out as Xero's own: Advertising is 400 in both, Repairs and Maintenance is 473 in both. Rates, Water and Property Management are added because no landlord can do without them. The matching that usually defeats an integration is done before you begin.

Rent and commission stay apart

Each kind of income is banked into its own Xero account and each kind of expense paid from its own, because rent and commission rarely share a bank account. Every record also carries a reference naming its line of business, so one Xero organisation can still report on each separately.

Both directions, chosen separately

Income, expenses, contacts and accounts each get their own direction: leave alone, send, bring in, or both. Nothing is ever deleted or overwritten on either side, and a record is never copied twice however often you sync.

One address book, not two

Contacts are matched by name and created on whichever side is missing them. A supplier you add here appears there; someone named on a Xero invoice appears here. The two lists converge without anyone maintaining them.

Nothing is quietly dropped

When a record cannot be sent, it is named and the reason given: no contact on it, no account to file it against, dated in the future. You are told what did not happen, not just what did.

Xero is optional and off until you turn it on. It is one of the modules you choose when you set up your account, and it can be switched on or off later without touching your records. Read the full Xero guide for exactly what lands in your accountant's books, and what the connection deliberately does not do.

Read before you decide

Longer pieces on the parts of the app people ask most about, written to be understood rather than to impress. Each one is honest about the limits as well as the capabilities.

Who it is for

Tax App covers commission income, rental income and household expenses.

Commission earners and contractors

For people whose income arrives unevenly through the year.

  • See the tax to set aside as you earn
  • Year-on-year comparisons to the same day of the tax year
  • Commission profit and loss and statement exports per contractor

Landlords and co-owners

For rental properties owned by couples, families or groups.

  • Co-owners recorded with their actual ownership percentages
  • Rental profit and loss apportioned per owner share
  • Tenancy agreements, bonds and documents attached to the property

Households

For keeping a full tax year of income and expenses in one place.

  • Income, expenses and documents organised per tax year
  • Bank statement reconciliation shows what has not been recorded
  • One PDF summary at year end, ready for filing

How it works

  1. Create an account and add your income sources

Commission, rentals or both. Setup takes a few minutes, and you can invite your partner or accountant to the same organisation.

  2. Record income and expenses

Upload bank CSV statements and invoice photos, or enter records directly. Statement matching and AI invoice extraction fill in most of the detail.

  3. Follow your tax position through the year

Every record updates the calculated tax for the year. At year end, export the PDF summary for filing.

Accuracy and data handling

How the numbers are calculated, and where your data lives.

How the numbers are calculated

  • Income tax is calculated from the IRD marginal brackets for each tax year
  • Past tax years use the rates that applied at the time
  • Tax credits, GST, ACC and KiwiSaver are accounted for on each record
  • Any figure can be checked against the IRD calculator

How your data is handled

  • Stored in New Zealand on AWS infrastructure in Auckland, encrypted in transit and at rest, and backed up daily
  • Passwords are encrypted in your browser before transmission and stored only as salted hashes; Sign in with Google is available instead
  • Bank feeds are read-only and run through Akahu; your internet banking login never touches Tax App
  • Organisation roles control access, and read-only members cannot change records
  • Everything exports as CSV or PDF, and you can delete your account and its data at any time

Read the full security page for how encryption, documents, bank feeds and access control work.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tax App really free?

Yes. During early access every feature is free and no card is required. If paid plans are introduced, existing users will be told well in advance and nothing will be charged without explicit agreement.

How are the tax numbers calculated?

Income tax is calculated from the IRD brackets and credits in force for each tax year, so past years use the rates that applied at the time. Because IRD taxes your total income, the app stacks your income in order: any PAYE salary first (already taxed by your employer), then commission, then rental, and shows only the extra tax each source adds. You can check any figure against the IRD calculator. Always confirm final numbers with IRD or your accountant before filing.

Where is my data stored?

Your records are stored on AWS infrastructure in Auckland, New Zealand, and the daily backups are held in New Zealand too. That is deliberate. Inland Revenue's rules keep business records in New Zealand by default, and we keep records and backups here by choice; the rules also allow offshore storage with IRD approval or through an IRD-approved provider, and allow offshore backups where the primary records stay in New Zealand. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Passwords are encrypted in your browser before transmission and stored only as salted hashes. You can also sign in with Google instead of a password. The API and email delivery run from Sydney, but neither stores your records.

Can my accountant use it?

Yes, in two ways. You can invite them to your organisation as a read-only member, or you can give them the PDF tax summary and rental profit and loss reports at year end.

Does it handle GST, ACC and KiwiSaver?

Yes. Commission income tracks GST, ACC levies and KiwiSaver per record, and the annual tax summary itemises each of them.

Can I import my bank statements?

Yes, two ways. Connect a bank feed through Akahu and import transactions with one click, or upload CSV statements from your bank. Either way the reconciliation screen matches each transaction against your records, remembers your regular payers, and lists any lines that have not been recorded.

Is a bank feed safe?

The connection runs through Akahu, a New Zealand open banking provider, and Tax App never asks for or sees your internet banking login. The app holds only access tokens that can read transactions, not move money. They are stored encrypted, never displayed again, and you can revoke them at Akahu or disconnect in the app at any time. The security page explains how all data is protected.

What does connecting Xero actually do?

Your income records become sales invoices in Xero and your expenses become bills, each carrying the date, the amount, the contact and the account it belongs against. Income arrives already marked as paid, because Tax App only ever records money you have actually received. Expenses arrive as bills with their invoice due date, and are marked paid when you reconcile them, which is the point the money is known to have left the account. Nothing is ever deleted or overwritten on either side, and a record is never copied twice however often you sync. The Xero page explains the whole arrangement, including what it deliberately does not do.

Do I have to match my categories to Xero accounts by hand?

Almost never. Every organisation starts with the same chart of expense accounts Xero itself starts with, carrying the very same codes: Advertising is 400 in both, Repairs and Maintenance is 473 in both. Three more are added that Xero does not provide and no landlord can do without: Rates, Water and Property Management. So the two charts line up before you begin. You can change any of it, and each account shows its code beside its name.

Will Xero see my rental and my other work as one business?

No. Every record sent to Xero carries a reference naming its line of business, so a single Xero organisation holding both a rental and a practice can still be reported on separately. Bank accounts are set per kind of income and expense too, so rent settles against the account rent is actually banked into and commission against its own.

Does Tax App replace Xero?

No, and it is not trying to. Xero is a full accounting suite with invoicing, payroll and GST returns, and it is where most accountants work. Tax App is a simpler tracker for commission income, rentals and household expenses that works out your tax position through the year. Connecting the two means you keep records once, in whichever place suits you, and your accountant still finds them where they expect. Direct GST filing to Inland Revenue is in development; today you file in myIR or through your accountant.

Is my Xero password shared with Tax App?

No, and it cannot be. You approve the connection at Xero itself, which asks which of your organisations to share and hands back a key that opens that one and nothing else. Tax App never sees your Xero login. You can withdraw the permission from inside Xero at any time, or disconnect in the app, and nothing is removed from either set of books when you do.

Can I get my data out again?

Yes. Income and expense lists export to CSV and every report downloads as a PDF. You can also export your full organisation data as a single archive, and you can delete your account and its data at any time.

How is Tax App different from Xero, MYOB or Hnry?

Xero and MYOB are full accounting suites built for businesses, with invoicing, payroll and GST returns. Hnry acts as a tax agent for sole traders and charges a percentage of income. Tax App is a simpler tracker for commission income, rentals and household expenses. It calculates your tax position through the year and organises the information you or your accountant need for filing. Direct GST filing to Inland Revenue is in development. Tax App is not a tax agent and does not act on your behalf with IRD.
